Heritage and the National Past: British cinema in the 1980s
British filmmakers produced some notable successes in the 1980s including
biting critiques of life in Thatcherite Britain. However, if the key
cultural legacy of Thatcherism was the heritage industry, the most
significant strand of British cinema at the time was the period drama.
Andrew Higson asks, was this Thatcher’s Cinema? Andrew Higson is Professor
of Film Studies at the University of East Anglia and author of English
Heritage, English Cinema: The Costume Drama in the 1980s and 1990s
