OPTICS: CINEMA, VISION & OPTICAL MACHINES
To celebrate the Hayward Gallery exhibition EYES LIES & ILLUSIONS, Curzon
Cinemas present a programme exploring mechanisms of vision and optical
machines.
Voyeurism, hallucination, memory, illusion... Cinema has invented visual
devices and optical experiences that filmmakers have sometimes included in
the plot, structure and theme of their films. Powell's PEEPING TOM,
Antonioni's BLOW UP and Hitchcock's REAR WINDOW mirror the power of cinema,
and tell an ambiguous fascination with the act of viewing and recording
reality.
The season also includes shorts and features by experimental filmmakers such
as Harun Farocki and Gabor Body, dealing with the advent of cinema, image
processing and the medium of cinematography it-self.
