JEAN-LUC GODARD & ANNE-MARIE MIÉVILLE
Curzon Soho, London
SIX FOIS DEUX/SUR ET SOUS LA COMMUNICATION
FRANCE/TOUR/DETOUR/DEUX ENFANTS
Jean-Luc Godard collaborated with filmmaker and partner Anne-Marie Miéville
on a series of radically innovative video works for television. Conceived as
essays, the series are based on a critical analysis of mass media and
communication in contemporary culture. Beginning in 1976 with SIX FOIS
DEUX/SUR ET SOUS LA COMMUNICATION these programmes, addressed to a large
audience, propose another type of television, closer to social reality and
more critical. Introducing a “television of opposition”, Godard and Miéville
plunge the viewer into an exploration of communication which also reveals an
introspection, so specific to Godard's cinema.
SIX FOIS DEUX/SUR ET SOUS LA COMMUNICATION was made in Grenoble between 1975
and 1976. It is constituted of a series of six 100 minute programmes, each
subdivided into two 50 minute programmes. The work is a discursive visual
essay on one aspect of the production and consumption of images. It is
paired with interviews on work and life with an individual, a writer, the
mentally-ill, scholars, prisoners, filmmakers and Godard himself. These
extended interviews provide a subjective counterpoint to the theoretical
essays on work, economics and mass cultural imagery.
FRANCE/TOUR/DETOUR/DEUX ENFANTS (1977-78) includes twelve programmes of 26
minutes length (called "movements" as an allusion to the musical movements).
Godard and Miéville present a complex, intimate study of communication
constructed around Godard's interviews with two children about the place
where they live - home, school or the street.

FIRST AND FOURTH MOVEMENTS.
France 1978. 52mins. Beta.
FIRST MOVEMENT: OBSCUR/CHIMIE begins at night. Camille gets undressed and
then goes to bed, while "the monsters" of consumer society use the motorways
to get home as quickly as possible. The night is the essence of questioning,
differentiating first between what is light and what is OBSCURE or dark. It
is also the origin of things and their CHEMISTRY. In FOURTH MOVEMENT:
INCONNU/TECHNIQUE, a fixed camera, "not a camera that watches but one that
transmits", films Arnaud in the classroom. To approach the UNKNOWN, it is
sometimes necessary to forget TECHNIQUE. At school, they know how to
transmit the UNKNOWN through individuals and books, while in the world of
the "monsters", technique predominates: "The monsters would be incapable of
understanding a human language."
