3 to the power of 3:2
BABETTE MANGOLTE, FRANK SAINSBURY, JIMMY ROBERT
The second in this series of artists’ film and video screenings presents two
films by Babette Mangolte on the individual and the social in suburban
California, with a fascinating documentary on a modernist housing project by
Frank Sainsbury and new work by Jimmy Robert: two exquisite super8 films and
two specially conceived live performances. The programme tracks questions
about community and dwelling spaces, about expression, personal freedom and
social control that are ultimately articulated as a new perspective on the
auditorium itself.
Programme
KENSAL HOUSE, Frank Sainsbury, UK 1937, 16mm, 11mins
Sponsored by the Gas Council, this is a film record of Kensal House, an
'experimental', modernist housing complex built as part of the
slum-clearance scheme in the mid-thirties. It describes a radical cohesion
between private accommodation and public areas; a nursery for residents'
children and space to grow plants and vegetables.
THERE? WHERE?, Babette Mangolte, US 1979, 16mm, 9mins
Babette Mangolte has called this film an essay on displacement. Brilliantly
shot, her excursion to the featureless suburbs of Southern California is
part documentary, part anti-documentary, a question about human beings and
the organisation of (social) space.
EMBERS, Jimmy Robert, UK 2003, super8, silent, 6 1/2mins
The intimate and the everyday, its personal record and poetic construction
invest /Embers /with an extraordinary sense of magic, between exquisite
colour and family ties.
OBJECT, Jimmy Robert, 2004, performance
A paper bag and quotes from Proust's "La Captive".
VISIBLE CITIES, Babette Mangolte, US 1991, 16mm, 31mins
A unique assay through new-build gated communities in suburban California as
two women search for a home, Visible Cities examines chance and order in the
landscape, nature and nurture, the construction and the inadequacy of
somebody else's ideal home.
BEAU GESTE, Jimmy Robert, UK/Holland 2004, super8, silent, 4mins
Semi-staged actions occurring within domestic spaces become epic and tender
icons, imbued with the romantic, with love.
MY AFFECTION, Jimmy Robert, UK/Holland 2004, performance
A super8 projector and a living screen.
