Hello Everyone
Apologies if you've already had the message from Phil Barker on the CETIS-
Metadata JISCMail list, but I thought I'd just pass this on to those of
you who would like a basic introduction to metadata.
As you've probably noticed, there's a lot going on in the accessibility
metadata arena at the moment and if you're not entirely sure what general
metadata is all about, then NISO (National Information Standards
Organization) - http://www.niso.org/ - have just produced a short, 20 page
guide to "Understanding Metadata". The guide (in PDF format) is available
for free from
http://www.niso.org/standards/resources/UnderstandingMetadata.pdf. The
initial pages which describe what metadata is and what is does provide a
good (not too technical) introduction and there is also a brief overview
of various metadata schemas, such as IEEE LOM and Dublin Core.
Hope you find it useful.
Best Regards
Sharon.
