to the

Florida Consortium for Latin American Studies'

Haitian Summer Institute

July 6-August 13, 2004

in North Miami, Florida, USA

Due to the security situation in Haiti, we have cancelled the two-week Haiti Study Abroad portion of the Haitian Summer Institute and replaced it with an intensive two-week intermediate Haitian Creole course. Non-degree seeking students, undergraduate and graduate degree-seeking students, and professionals may take one or more of the courses offered by the institute as their academic and professional requirements or personal schedules allow. Courses include:

HAI 3213 Accelerated (Basic) Haitian Creole, 8 am - noon, July 6-30, 2004.

HAI 3214 Accelerated Intermediate Haitian Creole, 8-11 am & 1-4 pm, August 2-13, 2004.

These two courses are taught by Professor Benjamin Hebblethwaite, who studied at the prestigious Indiana University Creole Institute and teaches Haitian Creole at the University of Florida (UF).

AFA 5932 People, Politics, and Culture of Haiti, 2-5 pm, July 6-30, 2004.

This course is taught by Professor Louis Noisin, a noted Haitian scholar and currently Chief of Staff for the Prime Minister of Haiti. The course will include guest lectures from a number of academic and public sector specialists on Haiti. Field trips are planned to "Little Haiti" and other Haitian Diaspora historical and cultural sites in Miami.

The above courses will be taught at Florida International University's (FIU) beautiful Biscayne Bay Campus (BBC) in North Miami, Florida. Low cost housing is available at BBC for out of town students. For additional information, program costs, and application procedures, please consult the Haitian Summer Institute web site at http://lacc.fiu.edu or call 305-348-2894. Applications for the Haitian Summer Institute will be accepted through June 28, 2004.

Note: A non-institute section of HAI 3213 Accelerated Haitian Creole will also be offered July 6-August 14, Tuesdays and Thursdays, 4 pm-6:45 pm, at FIU's University Park Campus in Miami, FL. This course is taught by Professor Jean-Robert Cadely of the FIU Modern Languages Department.

The Haitian Summer Institute is a US Department of Education Title VI sponsored program of the Florida Consortium for Latin American Studies (FIU Latin American and Caribbean Center and UF Center for Latin American Studies).
