Industrial and Labour Market Policy and Performance
Edited by Dan Coffey, University of Leeds, UK and Carole Thornley, Keele University, UK
This edited book contains ten substantive contributions on industrial and labour market policy themes. The book's motivating assumption is that industrial issues are inextricably linked with labour market concerns, and that policy approaches which attempt to consider production and employment separately are inherently flawed. Contributers include leading scholars like Keith Cowling, Francis Green, Jonathan Michie, Virginie Perotin and Malcolm Sawyer.
While the focus of the book is on UK policies and outcomes, the book includes a detailed study of the 'hollowing out'problem in Japan and draws on international comparative policy experience throughout. Topics covered include:
· industrial policy and competitiveness
· innovation, competition and collaboration
· TNCs and hollowing out in Japan
· labour market policy and income inequalities
· education, skills formation, and HRM
· equal ops and workplace efficiency
· the UK private finance initiative

4. The Amsterdam-Maastricht Summer University and the Faculty of History and Art Studies, Erasmus University, Rotterdam are proud to present the 8th edition of the course:
THE VALUE OF CULTURE
to be held from the 2nd to the 6th of August 2004 in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.
This course will explore two types of interrelationships between economy and culture: economic aspects of culture as well as cultural aspects of the economy. In doing so, the course is interdisciplinary, contrasting different academic perspectives and theoretical angles.
Questions that will be addressed include the following:
· In what respects do markets for art differ from other markets?
· Does the mode of financing of cultural goods (market income - government subsidies - charity donations) matter?
· How do cultural values and social relationships shape economic life?
To address these questions, the course will provide conceptual frameworks, case studies, and practical exercises, which will illuminate the analysis.
Course Leaders: Arjo Klamer (Erasmus University, Rotterdam", The Nethrlands), Olav Velthuis (Columbia University, New York, USA) and Jack Amariglio (Merrimack College, USA).

ASSOCIATION FOR HETERODOX ECONOMICS Annual Conference 2004
Call for Papers
Opening-up Economics
16 - 18 July, 2004
University of Leeds, UK
The legacy of neoliberalism and challenges of globalisation have led to an increased awareness of the economic across the social sciences and society more generally. In the debates that are emerging, heterodox economists are well-placed to contribute. Open to trans-disciplinary analyses, heterodox economics is able to bring new and progressive perspectives and policies to bear on the pressing economic and social problems facing society.
This conference aims to respond to such opportunities by opening-up the terrain of economics on two fronts:
First, from within economics. We encourage the submission of papers examining issues and deploying approaches neglected by the current orthodoxy, demonstrating the vitality of heterodox economics and its continued relevance to contemporary social questions.
Second by going beyond the traditional, narrow academic boundaries that define modern 'economics'. We invite papers that encourage dialogue between the various social sciences on a range of contemporary social issues.
Just as popular discontent is increasing about rising inequalities and uncertainties in the global economy, traditional economics is found wanting in providing an adequate understanding or response. In this spirit, the conference provides a forum for advancing new ideas on how to take heterodox political economy forward in theoretical and policy debates. Above all, it aims to demonstrate the continuing relevance of political economy to those within and without modern economics.
Deadline for submission:
We are happy to accept papers on these and other themes from a heterodox perspective. Please send an abstract of up to 1000 words
