Apologies for any cross posting - I was asked to forward the following
which I hope will be of interest.............................
DIGITAL MEDIA COMMISSION
Muni Arts Centre, Pontypridd
ARTIST’S BRIEF
Background
Rhondda Cynon Taff County Borough Council Cultural Services has an
established Digital Media programme, created with European Funding in 1999
consisting of participatory projects, conferences and a strategic network
of practitioners and educationalists. Commissioning of site-specific
digital artwork is an important development for the programme.
Where
The commission is to be created for the Muni Arts Centre which houses
a gallery, theatre/cinema, foyer and café, and is one of three Cultural
Services’ arts and entertainment venues across the borough. The Arts Centre
programme is undergoing development to engage a younger audience which
includes the introduction of digital media projects. The Muni is situated
just off the main shopping street of the bustling market town of Pontypridd
at the gateway to the Rhondda and Cynon Valleys. The town is home to
Ynysangharad Park, a popular local amenity. Pontypridd is situated close to
the River Taff and the A470.
The work
The digital media artist will be based at the Muni Arts Centre. The artist
will be expected to interact with Muni staff and visitors, in the
development of content for the work.
The work will have a broad appeal to residents of Pontypridd and the
Borough, reaching out with interactive and participatory processes to
create
a meaningful and positive experience for the community.
The artist will be commissioned to produce digital artwork(s) that draw
from the culture, locality, events, language, history or sense of place.
This may exploit locations, patterns, occurrences or intricacies in the
immediate or wider geographical context.
Short-listed artists will show a flare for the processes and outcomes which
best meet these aims.
Location of the work
The location of the work will be explored in consultation with the Project
Coordinator and subject to Risk Assessment and Health & Safety policies.
The resulting work will be displayed, exhibited or projected in the Muni
and/or in the locality of the Arts Centre. It will create dialogue between
local people the artwork and the building, a focus for visitors and a new
out reach programme.
Resources
Whilst use of the venue as a base is envisaged an element of remote working
will be negotiable. Some digital equipment, i.e.camera, video camera and a
scanner can be made available. A digital projector and a phone connection
are available for use in the centre. It is anticipated that the artist will
use their own computer.
