LEEDS MUSIC TECHNOLOGY
EDUCATION CONFERENCE
2004
SOUND-IMAGE-SPACE: APPLYING MUSIC TECHNOLOGY
Thursday 28th - Saturday 30th October 2004
Conference announcement and call for papers/works/installations
Following the success of the 1st Leeds Music Technology Education
Conference in 2003, Leeds College of Music announces LMTEC 2004: Sound-
Image-Space.
LMTEC has been established to provide a forum for the promotion of best
practice in music technology learning and teaching in Further and Higher
Education, through the dissemination of the latest research and
developments in the field and consideration of practical strategies for
teaching various skills and techniques. Music technology is broadly
defined as encompassing all aspects of the subject ranging from classical
electroacoustic composition to commercial music production. The conference
will be of particular relevance to lecturers and teachers of music
technology, researchers in music technology and music education, students
and industry specialists.
LMTEC 2004 CONFERENCE THEME
SOUND-IMAGE-SPACE: APPLYING MUSIC TECHNOLOGY
The 2004 conference will focus on the relationships between sound, image
and space that exist in both commercial and non-commercial applications of
music technology. The consideration of sound, image and space is explicit
in many areas which represent significant career destinations for
graduates of music technology courses. The composition and production of
music and sound for visual media such as film, television and computer
games are important applications of music technology. Awareness of space
and skills to manipulate sonic dimensions are vital in location and studio
recording, sound design and in the development of audio playback
technology. Many composers actively choose to exploit the exciting
possiblities of multi-media technology in their work, directly addressing
the relationships between sound, image and space through installations and
collaboration with visual artists. The conference will address good
practice in learning and teaching in these and other relevant areas.
THE CONFERENCE PROGRAMME WILL INCLUDE CONCERTS, STUDENT FRINGE EVENTS,
PAPERS AND PANEL DISCUSSIONS, INSTALLATIONS, TRADE EXHIBITS and optional
CONFERENCE DINNER.
Keynote Speaker: DAVID SONNENSCHEIN. David is an award-winning Sound
Designer who directs feature films, performs classical and jazz clarinet,
and teaches vibrational healing and sound design. He is co-founder and
president of Sonic Strategies, a company specialising in sonification for
interactive media and emerging technologies. His interests also focus upon
research and creation of sound for theraputic uses. David is mainly active
as a professional sound designer, director and producer, and teaches at
Escuela Internacional de Cine y Television in Cuba.
