Boston Cyberarts Artist in Residence Program
Request for Proposals
Apply online NOW! Application deadline is April 15, 2004
General information
Boston Cyberarts is offering two artist in residency opportunities for its summer 2004 artist residency in Massachusetts high technology corporations. This new program is available through a generous grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. Artists are expected to expand their uses of technical resources with researchers who use the same resources in different contexts. Technologists might influence the artist's working and/or creative process in the context of applied technologies. The anticipated outcome is interesting art; scientific innovations may follow.

2 Residency Locations and Schedules
Both residencies are scheduled for summer 2004. Each company sets the exact dates. The first two weeks of these residencies will allow the artist to become acclimated to the company environment. The artist will have access to engineers and technicians and will (without specific goals) explore the technology available to them. The following weeks will be more intensive. Working closely together the corporate collaborators and the artist will design a specific project that will be completed by the end of the residency.
* The Collaborative User Experience (CUE) Research Group at IBM Research/Cambridge residency is part of the IBM Watson Research Center. It takes place at their offices in Cambridge and will begin in June and go through August, lasting approximately three months. The exact duration will be negotiated between the chosen artist and CUE.
* Plum Voice Portals in Boston's South End offers a residency consisting of two weeks on-site in June and two weeks on-site in August. In between the company encourages a virtual residency through email and the web.
Qualified Applicants and Financial Support
There is a $500 honorarium per artist and a $50 a day stipend for the actual days of on-site residency to cover transportation and daily expenses. This is open to artists from anywhere in the United States, but they are responsible for transportation, room and board if they do not live within the immediate vicinity. Beyond this $500 honorarium and the specified $50 daily stipend, there is no additional financial support included with the Boston Cyberarts Artist in Residence program.
