BOOKING FORM
Slide Libraries & the Digital Future Study Day. ARLIS Visual Resources
Committee
DATE: Wednesday 24th March 2004
TIME: 10.00am - 16.30pm
VENUE: Royal College of Art, Kensington Gore, London, SW7 2EU
AUDIENCE: UK Slide Librarians in HE and those responsible for visual
collections
"Higher education in the UK has always needed images, especially in the
field of art and design, and institutions have built up their own slide
libraries to service that demand. Latterly, however, it is digital images
that are being sought by lecturers and students and numerous products are
being produced to accommodate this need. Slide librarians need to educate
themselves about these new products and update their skills so that they can
continue to ensure that their specialist knowledge of image use at higher
education level is applied by the new developers".
Jenny Godfrey (2004)
Based on the paper A Digital Future for Slide Libraries, by Jenny Godfrey,
published in the Art Libraries Journal, the day will aim to address issues
and inform practitioners about resources and good practice in the use of
digital images in HE in the UK.
As well as Jenny Godfrey, presenters will include Jan Murton (RCA) on the
project to digitise the RCA Record of Student Work, Nicola Bonnick (Kingston
University) on subscription image databases available on the web,
Marie-Therese Pym (Information Management Officer AHDS Visual Arts) on
creating metadata, Dr Martin Oliver (Education & Professional Development
UCL) on the digital image delivery project for Art History 1st Year at UCL,
and Maureen Bourne (Warwick University Slide Library) with a personal
account of her search for an image management system for the university's
visual resources collection. Digital copyright for images will also be
covered.
