Hi Geraldine
I am dying of curiosity to read this article for myself, not having access
to Saturday's Guardian. But yes, you are right - Pinter's war poems are
crap, no matter how poetic his plays, and he has every right to write crap,
and Paterson has every right to say so. And so do you and I.
I actually don't think it matters if people write bad poetry, or even if
people read bad poetry, as long as some people are writing and reading good
poetry (by which I mean, of course, the stuff I like). I have this theory
that the more activity there is, the bigger the pie. It may be
counterintuitive, and it goes against a lot of poet instincts, but in my
experience it's true. I get worried when people start fencing areas off and
nailing up keep out signs. This goes on all the time, but it's kind of more
fun to take off your shoes and run on the grass.
What the hell does he mean by "metaphorising"?
Cheers
A
