Hi
It might be because of my specific geographical location on the wild and
windy western edge of Europe but some questions about the internet and
contemporary poetry have been bothering me lately.
Sometimes I think the internet simply does what was done before but more
quickly and in greater quantities. And it is kind of old news; the internet
has gone from being a new frontier (with all the problems of the frontier)
to being a combined car boot sale (e bay) and peep show. But while these are
dominant functions limitless space still exists to publish, archive and
distribute poetry. So the potential is still there even if it now seems more
like reclaiming space rather than inhabiting free space.
The internet is a perfect medium for the publication and distribution of
poetry that might not be published by mainstream presses. I wonder if this
is the case.
So the questions bothering me are as follows.
What impact has the internet had on the publication and distribution of
poetry? Do more people read more and different poetry?
Does the internet, as a means of distribution of
poetry, challenge ideas of regional, national and international poetries?
The internet supports processes of collaborative writing (remember Trevor’s
project those who were involved). Has this changed ideas of authorship?
Any help welcome. The evenings are drawing in.
Ian
