Happy New Year all --it is the Year of the Monkey is it not?
I saw volumes on the death of the author and felt sad as it brings back memories of people I knew who all discussed the death of the author, and all are now sadly deceased. Malcolm Bradbury, Lora Sage and Guido Almansi. I sat in Lorna's home and remember her picking out a slim volume which had the essay in it, it was near books by Calvino. My own take on this issue is that it is political. One should see it in the French context of their political history, the sixties and the intellectual battles with the establishment including the universities. It can be read as the death of the canon.
Something I find of curiosity, not linked to the death of the author, but perhaps the subject for a poem. The odd shoe or boot. Every country I have been to, as soon as I walk along a grass verge I see over a fence a solitary shoe or boot. Strange.
The souls of blackbirds? Why would one throw one shoe away? Keep the other for what? Home to fieldmice?
Regarding poetics. In Harriet Monroe founded Poetry .. most poems have one exotic word or archaic word. Have you noticed that?
