To members of the BMLA mailbase,

Intense Pulse Light devices pose a difficulty with respect to
advising on suitable protective eyewear. All personal protective
equipment (PPE) must be CE marked if it is sold as such in
Europe. A supplier may CE mark to any standard he wishes but it
is expensive and so he will wish to mark against a recognised
standard rather than a one-off whim of a Laser Protection Adviser.
The safety standard for laser eyewear is EN207. This is based on
EN60825. (We could have a long discussion on the differences
between these standards, but not now.)

I don't want this mailbase to be a vehicle for vested commercial
interest (and we have actively removed anyone who did this) but I
am passing on an e-mail that I received from Paul Brown in Bristol
because the content may be of interest to mailbase users.

This does not mean that I am endorsing the use of this product.
Anyone wishing to use it must satsify him/herself that it is fit for
the intended purpose.

Regards
Harry Moseley

Dear Dr. Brown,

Further to our recent telephone conversation, I am confirming prices for

IPL protective eyewear from LaserVision and also the OD curve for this

filter S1811. Please note that the filter is tested from 620nm-800nm

according to EN60825-1 (EN207), although protection is sufficiently high at

OD3+, from 800nm-1200nm, as discussed. The OD curve relates to a specific

batch for this filter and hence readings from this curve should not be

taken as guaranteed protection levels outside of the tested regions.

Filter S1811:

Visible light transmission: 15% (not less than good sunglasses), Colour:

Blue.

Protection to EN 207: @ 620-800nm DIR L3, (800-1200nm OD3+ )

QTY Part No. Description Unit Price

1 01.7S1.811.00 Frame L-07K with filter S1811 £185.00

1 01.8S1.811.00 Frame L-08K with filter S1811 £230.00

1 99.999.999.CE CE certification for 1-5 pairs of identical eyewear

£160.00

All prices exclude VAT.

Delivery included.

Currently, due to low order quantities (no regulation to require sales)

this is still a special filter so CE certification is carried out on

individual orders instead of large batches. The CE certification charge

covers 1-5 pairs of identical eyewear.

I have been contacted by several beauticians and clinicists who complain

that their existing eyewear does not provide sufficient protection as they

have eye strain and headaches at the end of their day when using the IPL

machine for a long period of time. As there is no regulation for IPL

eyewear the manufacturers supply sunglasses or welding glasses to protect

against the UV and glare, but this protection is not necessarily

sufficiently to protect against the wide range of IPL emissions, as shown

by the problems (eye strain, headaches) reported by IPL users.

We have a pair of demo 01.8S1.811.00 in our offices. Should you wish to

view them I can loan them to you, or bring them with me on my next visit.

For your reference we also supply IPL test equipment, power/energy meter

which can be used with the gel interface so that an accurate reading of the

energy/power density at the skin surface can be obtained. Alternative

power/energy meter versions cannot be used with the gel interface but can

also be used with other laser sources.

Please do not hesitate to contact me if I can be of further assistance at

any time.

Yours sincerely

Fiona Evans
