Hi Arthur
I am a relative newbie to the group and as we tried out self enroll this
year I thought I'd take this chance to dive in to the discussion.... :-)
This has been our first year (and mine!) of using Blackboard at NUI Galway,
so a big learning experience and still early days for us. Our Computer
Services ran regular bulk enrollments for specific Blackboard courses, at
the start of each semester, based on the data feeding through to them from
MIS. We found that there were significant delays or gaps with some of this
data so we enabled 'self enroll' in many of our courses to address this, and
altered our default course creation settings to having 'self enroll'
switched on (with full knowledge of staff of course). We have left it up to
staff to monitor for 'imposters', and to place any time/password
restrictions on the self enroll. I expect that most did not place such
restrictions, but I think it would be a good practice for us to recommend
they do next year, as things scale up.
Self enroll has not given rise to any problems/disasters to our knowledge -
so far!!! But it is hard to know what the take up of it has been, and some
students still seemed to have problems figuring out how to do this (in spite
of step by step instructions from the lecturer!). One lecturer who used
self enroll reported that only a third of his students had actually enrolled
in his Blackboard course! But this may have been for other reasons, and as
Blackboard gathers momentum here I suppose students will catch on to the
self enroll method more easily. Next academic session, I expect we will be
sticking with a combination of bulk enrollments and self enroll.
Good luck with migrating to v6!
All the best
Jenny Booth

Subject: Catalogue Question
Hi,
Working away preparing for migration to Bv6 Basic (from 5.5.1 Basic).
Been thinking about opening the catalogue for view to allow self
enrollment.. This would help at the beginning of semester by reducing the
admin load when dealing with delayed registrations.
Staff would need to set period of enrollment and a password and inform
students at first lecture/tutorial etc.
Your views on this would be appreciated. Have there been any associated
problems/disasters?
thanks,
Artur Loughran
