hey everyone,
I am an undergraduate industrial design student and I am preparing a proposal to establish a Biomimetic Design Research Centre. I am trying to get some feedback and "market research" from the engineering and scientific communities. I have a few basic and general questions that I hope can spearhead a discussion on how design can expand their role in biomimetics.
First, what role has design/designers had in your biomimetic research initiatives to-date? Where there any instances in which you thought designers could have benefited or assisted in your projects?
Secondly, designers can assist engineers and scientists to commercialize their patents by creating product concepts. Have you ever considered applying your technical solutions to creating new products and would you welcome working with product designers on this venture?
From a design research point of view, I am also interested in using biomimetics as a tool for innovation. By this, I mean that I want to envision methods/processes how designers can use biomimetics not as a resource for answers or information, but rather as a way of thinking and solving problems. How do you approach biomimetics from your professional perspective? As a field of science or a way of thinking? This greatly interests me!
Thanks for any input and I hope we can discuss some of these issues further!
