I received notice from English Heritage today that the
'Blue Plaques Panel, which met today to discuss the latest list of proposed
names. Among the nominations were three you had suggested: Ottobah Cugoano,
Lewis Latimer and V.K. Krishna Menon. I am delighted to tell you that
Cugoano and Menon were shortlisted by the Panel and will go forward for a
full historical report. Latimer, however, was rejected as the Panel felt
that his time in London was too brief to warrant commemoration and that,
although an important figure in the US, he was not responsible for the first
electric lights to be installed in London's streets.'
