>
> Saturday 28 February 2004
>
> A unique one-day conference to recognise, honour, celebrate and chart the
> local history of West Indian Seamen who sailed on the Harrison lines into
> the West India Docks during the post war years. It will be held in the
> Wilberforce Theatre at the recently opened Museum in Docklands on Saturday
> 28 February10am - 4pm.
>
> The Tower Hamlets African and Caribbean Mental Health Organisation
> (THACMHO) initiated the idea for the conference as part of their "Health
> Through History" programme. The idea was further developed and supported
> by the Museum In Docklands (part of the Museum of London Group) and the
> National Archives Moving Here Project.
>
> THACMHO's Development Worker Harry Cumberbatch said: "This is the first
> time such an event has taken place in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets
> ; it is crucial to hold it at this time because the Seaman are reaching
> the age where unless their stories are documented now, they may be lost
> forever. The project will record their part in London's history, forever
> enabling young people to be inspired by and to fully realise the
> contribution West Indian Seamen made to East London's social and economic
> development".
>
> During the conference, retired seamen will share stories of their voyages
> and experiences of the docks. A short documentary of the docks during
> that period will be shown and there will be an exhibition on the Harrison
> Line Shipping Company. The day will be chaired by Winston Pinder a
> Community Consultant. In attendance will be the High Commissioner of
> Barbados His Excellency Mr Edwin Pollard who will address the conference
> and Charlie Philips a Community Historian who will present an overview of
> his experience in the Docks during the 1960s.
>
