International annual workshop: "Monitoring the Political systems in the Baltic countries: year 2004", The Konrad Adenauer Foundation Latvia, the German-Latvian Centre for Social Sciences & Institute of Advanced Social and Political Research, University of Latvia, Riga, 10 - 11 December 2004
The Konrad Adenauer Foundation Latvia, the German-Latvian Centre for Social Sciences, the Institute of Advanced Social and Political Research at the University of Latvia, the Centre for German Studies at the Södertörn University College in Stockholm, and the International Science Center at the University of Örebro are organizing an international workshop in order to evaluate the political and institutional development in the Baltic countries. The workshop will become an annual event primarily aimed at social researchers. It will provide a regular and informal forum for exchange of opinions and information for researchers with an interest in social, economic, and political development of the Baltic countries. The purpose of the workshop is to give the participants time and inspiration to think about recent and ongoing events and processes within a broader theoretical framework and on a larger timescale. Participants are also encouraged to suggest their own topics for discussion at the workshop. The organizers would appreciate receiving suggestions in advance by email.
Professor Bernd Henningsen of Humboldt University Berlin is the head of this workshop project. For more specific information, please contact Victor Makarov at [log in to unmask] or Ivars Ijabs at [log in to unmask]
International Interdisciplinary Conference: "Political Cultures, Values and Identities in the Baltic Sea Region: Transcending East and West, Moving Towards a Common Agenda",
German-Latvian Centre & Institute of Advanced Social and Political Research, University of Latvia, Riga, 10 - 13 February 2005
The conference will bring together experienced academics and young researchers to discuss the state of political cultures in the Nordic and Baltic countries, the cultural preconditions for institutionalization of democratic values, etc. A particular emphasis will be put on the context of 'Europeanization' that has recently transformed the political identities in the region. The conference will focus on the inclusive and broad notion of 'political culture' to stimulate an innovative interdisciplinary debate in which insights from both humanities and social sciences become mutually enriching. It will also promote an issue-oriented and comparative approach as a useful analytical tool for understanding similarities and differences in the region and transcending the traditional 'East / West' distinction within the Baltic Sea Region.
The conference is organized by the German-Latvian Centre & Institute of Advanced Social and Political Research, University of Latvia i n collaboration with the Baltic Sea School Berlin / Humboldt-University, International Science Center / Örebro University, Södertörn University College / Stockholm, Centre for Baltic Studies/University of Copenhagen / Öresund University.
