Subject: RE: move away chin control joysticks
In this particular application the client was using tank style steering with
her elbows pushing backwards. Not perhaps the most elegant of solutions, but
this was the only free driving solution open to them.
A QED Dreadnought switch was fixed onto a low spring rate RS foot switch.
The client operated the QED switch to produce mobility. But, if the client
spasmed, her pattern of spasm was such that she pressed back with her elbows
and her head.
Pressing the elbow switches too hard resulted in the normally closed foot
switches becoming O/C which interrupted the drive signal to the chair.
It would be nice to have fully adjustable spring rates on these switches,
but that is not possible with present resources.
During the handover the system was working successfully.
The head switch was provided with a pivot arrangement which allowed a small
range of fore/aft movement. Another foot switch was positioned at the back
of this mechanism such that the free travel on the pivot mechanism was taken
up, but the switch not operated. Excessive pressure on the head rest
resulted in the switches common to the chair drive being interrupted.
Hope this was of interest.
Best regards,
Geoff
