Whizz-Kidz has been provided with independent vouchers from wheelchair
services for young people who may be assessed for 6mph wheelchairs.
Sometimes using the 6mph version is a cheaper route if additional
functions are needed than putting extra function on to a 4mph chair. We
may then re-program the speed to a lower speed if necessary. However if
it is left at a higher speed the user needs to understand there they can
use it, as legally 4mph is the highest speed on pavements. For some
people it is better to leave the chair set with the potential to go at
the higher speed and allow them to choice the speed appropriately. This
gives the user the ability to escape in emergencies and move at a speed
faster than the average walking/running person, as attacks on disabled
people do occur. Anne

Subject: powered wheelchair vouchers
Does anyone out there who is working in wheelchair services, give out
vouchers for powered wheelchairs. If you do have you had to address the
situation of an individual who wants to upgrade to a class 3 vehicle
(8mph). Do you allow it or do you stick to the remit of the nhs whereby
we only assess for class 2 vehicles (4mph)?
I'd be gratefoul for any thoughts, we don't do vouchers for powered
chairs but were weighing up the pros and cons.
