A lady who lives near Croydon has a wooden chest full of boxes of seals that
she wishes to deposit in a suitable public repository as soon as possible as
she is involved in an urgent house clearance. She had already tried several
other offices before she ended up with me so I would like to help her out if
possible. Originally she thought the seals all related to the see of
Canterbury but on further investigation this does not appear to be the case.
The boxes have titles such as consistory court, capitular, vicars choral,
suffragen bishop, customs of the staple of Nottingham, Staple of Lincoln,
sheriffs etc.
She was given the chest by her vicar when she was a child, and there is no
more information on the provenance. I obviously have not seen the collection
as it a long way from Canterbury.
If anyone is interested I'd be grateful if they could drop me an email and
I'll pass on your details to the lady. Alternatively if anyone can suggest
a suitable place for her to contact, this would be very helpful. I'm
already grateful to colleagues from Lambeth Palace for their help with this
issue.
Many thanks,
Heather Forbes
