Archivist
New College
The College wishes to appoint an archivist with a postgraduate
qualification in Archives Management to this senior post, on the retirement
of Caroline Dalton. This is a full-time post under the supervision of the
Librarian. The archival holdings are rich and diverse, dating from 1379 to
present day, and the person appointed will assume responsibility for both
the historic and modern archives of New College. Salary will be within
Senior Librarian Grades 1-2 (currently £18,265-£27,339) according to
experience; plus pension scheme, SCR membership and free parking. Further
particulars are available from the Librarian, New College, Oxford, OX1 3BN;
tel. 01865 279580; email: [log in to unmask] and the closing date
for applications is Wednesday 2 June 2004.
The archives are stored in three repositories. The oldest is in the
Muniment Tower, which was new in 1386! The others are in the Bell Tower,
finished in 1400 but adapted for library and archival storage in 1996, and
a cellar with rolling stacks containing post 1850 administrative records.
The archives contain evidence of College endowment, administration and
finance from the outset and the earliest documents are 11th century title
deeds. Estate papers and lease books provide 625 years of local history on
College estates, and the maps are particularly fine. There are also
collections of former Fellows' papers eg. Rev. Sydney Smith 1771-1845 and
Lord Milner 1854-1925. The College website provides additional information
about the archives: www.new.ox.ac.uk/archives.
