The Wellcome Library, part of the Wellcome Trust (the UK's largest medical research charity) is a major centre for the study of the history of medicine. The Library holds c.600,000 printed books and journals as well as an extensive manuscript, archive and image collection. The library is reference only and is open to the public, free of charge, six days a week.
Over the past few years the Web has had a huge impact on the availability of medical information. There are, however, few established arrangements for archiving Web sites, and with the average life of a Web page estimated to be around 44 days, there is need for urgent action to ensure that this information is not irrevocably lost. Faced with these challenges the Wellcome Library, along with other partners such as the British Library, JISC and the National Archives, have formed the UK Web Archiving Consortium [UKWAC].
The Wellcome Library is now seeking to appoint a Web Archiving Project Officer to develop and manage our contribution to this Consortium. This is a fixed term contract for 2 years. Salary will be in the region of 25000 GBP + benefits.
Specific duties include:
* Defining and implementing a Web-archiving collection development policy
* Using PANDAS software to archive and catalogue selected Web sites and make the archive accessible on the Internet
* Working with the UKWAC to define and test enhancements to the PANDAS software
* Promoting the archive
* Evaluating the project and providing recommendations on the future of Web archiving for the Wellcome Library.
Applicants should have:
* A degree or professional qualification in Librarianship, Computing or Information Science
* At least 2-years experience of successfully running an Internet-based project
* Project skills
* Excellent interpersonal, communication and organisational skills
* Knowledge of standards such as MARC21, and OAI
* An understanding and awareness of the importance of Web archiving
This is an exciting opportunity to help shape the development of Web archiving in the UK.
