Dear all
As always many thanks to colleagues who drew my attention to a number of
articles on the above. As you all saw from Gwen Mclay's reply a sum of about
£150,000 was raised by a Group from Poole to purchase some of the items
from the Auction.
The Daily Telegraph reported on 29 March that Poole Council had offered to
buy the lot plus some items not in the Auction for £250,00 but this was
dependant on Lottery funding which unfortunately was not forthcoming.
However local people including the great grandson of the founder did raise
£75,000, including a grant from the Council, a local charitable trust, and a
donation from the new owners of the Pottery, and were due to receive a grant
from the V&A to add to the funds, so that they could bid on the day.
Subsequently the Daily Telegraph reported that the fund purchased 68 of the
100 lots it was bidding for and this included ¾ of the company's records and
photographs on sale. They used up £88,500 of their funds and are hoping to
use the rest of their funds to do some further purchasing presumably from
dealers who purchased items on the day. The items will be added to the Local
Poole Museum's collection, and presumably the Archives will be retained with
them.
There was also an Article in the Museums Journal for April reporting on the
sale and descrying the splitting up of the Archives and the collection.
An admirable tale of local initiative and well done to the V&A for
supporting them.
Cheers
Nigel
