CATALOGUING TEAM VACANCIES
POSTAL HERITAGE TRUST
Location: London, WC1
Four exciting opportunities have arisen in the Cataloguing Team of the
newly created Postal Heritage Trust, formed from the archive and museum of
Royal Mail. Our registered museum and public record archive collections
range from sheets of penny blacks, and 1930s films, to business records,
mobile post offices, and telegrams from the sinking Titanic. Documentation
of our holdings is a core activity.
ARCHIVIST (IT)
DO YOU HAVE:
· A post-graduate qualification in Archives and Records Management or
equivalent, recognised by the Society of Archivists.
· Two years post-qualification experience, and intend to achieve
admission to the Professional Register of the Society of Archivists, via
the Society’s Registration Scheme.
· Experience of working with CALM or similar cataloguing software,
for data manipulation and administration as well as for cataloguing.
· Experience in cataloguing, of catalogue enhancement tools such as
thesauri and authority records, and a good working knowledge of relevant
standards (such as ISAD(G) and ISAAR(CPF)) and their application.
COULD YOU:
· Work on the CALM collections management database to ensure that the
data it includes is of the highest standards; and work to mount this data
on the web.
· Catalogue archival material as part of the cataloguing team, and
participate in cataloguing project work.
· Produce and maintain a high quality set of hard copy catalogues in
multiple locations, including the searchroom and museum objects store.
· Develop and maintain cataloguing support services in the searchroom.
This post attracts a salary of £23,500 pa.
ARCHIVIST (CATALOGUING)
DO YOU HAVE:
· A recognised post-graduate qualification in Archives and Records
Management, or equivalent, or are about to obtain one.
· Experience in the use of archive management / cataloguing software.
· Experience of providing a public service.
· Experience of archive cataloguing, with a good working knowledge of
ISAD(G), ISAAR (CPF), NCA rules, and other relevant standards.
COULD YOU:
· Catalogue archival material as part of a team, to required and
agreed standards.
· Run the cataloguing communications plan and assist in training
other staff.
· Administer and participate in archival project work such as
stocktaking.
· Co-ordinate and provide the Cataloguing Team’s input to
interpretative aids, guides, and the like; also work on catalogue
enhancement tools such as thesauri and authority records.
This post attracts a salary of £21,500 pa. Those about to complete an
archives qualification this summer are welcome to apply.
CATALOGUER (COLLECTIONS)
DO YOU HAVE:
· A recognised Museum Studies qualification, or equivalent.
· Experience of working in, and documentation in, a museum
environment.
· Experience of working to agreed and recognised standards, such as
SPECTRUM, and a good working knowledge of them.
· Experience of editing computer catalogue data and data manipulation.
COULD YOU:
· Work on the documentation of our non-public record museum material.
· Work on the enhancement of existing catalogue data, and to oversee
and promote its publication.
· Participate in digitisation and digital documentation projects,
including as part of routine cataloguing work.
· Document locations and collections management data as part of a
team.
This post attracts a salary of £21,500 pa, and is fixed-term for twelve
months in the first instance.
CATALOGUER (PHILATELY)
DO YOU HAVE:
· A good honours degree. A degree in history, with knowledge of the
nineteenth century to the present day, would be an advantage.
· Experience of cataloguing / documentation in a museum or archive
environment.
· Experience of using IT systems and databases for documentation work.
· A high level of literacy and an eye for accuracy.
· A knowledge of or interest in philately would be an advantage.
COULD YOU:
· Catalogue public record philatelic material to agreed standards, in
skeleton format at first and in greater detail later.
· Participate in any further philatelic cataloguing projects.
· Produce catalogues of philatelic material (skeleton or complete) in
a publishable and usable form, including a form suitable for electronic
publication via the web.
This post would suit a graduate looking for experience of archive work
before applying for a place on a recognised course. It attracts a salary of
£17,000 - £19,000 pro-rata, and is fixed-term for six to nine months in the
first instance.
FOR ALL POSTS:
We offer 22.5 days holiday plus public and bank holidays per year, with a
pro-rata entitlement for fixed term posts. The working week is 36 hours,
flexible between 8.30am and 5.30pm.
