COALFIELD HERITAGE PROJECT - KENT (CHIK)
The Kent Coalfield area has both a rich and largely unrecorded history and attractive surrounding downland countryside. The CHIK project will record and celebrate the mining heritage of East Kent through the preparation of a community archive comprising photographs, documents, text stories, oral reminiscences and video clips. The aim being the creation of a virtual museum of life in the Kent Coalfields through CD-ROMs and the Internet combined with a travelling exhibition on the Kent Coalfields. The Miner's Way Trail (Phase Two: The Coalfields Trail) will utilise the information obtained to develop a coalfields trail focusing on the old coalfield sites and the surrounding countryside. The idea is to have three linked trails not only suitable for walkers, but also cyclists and horse riders. The trail will feature signage, interpretation and artwork. Supporting literature and a travelling exhibition will be produced to market the trail, illustrate memorabilia and tell stories of what life was like living and working in the Kent Coalfields.
