This year sees the 200th anniversary of the first steam locomotive to run on
rails. This month we celebrate pioneering engineers and inventors,
locomotive manufacturers and railway companies, rail workers' unions and
railway enthusiasts.

and Reading, from the University of Wales, Bangor, and from the Bodleian
Library, the Bodleian Library of Commonwealth and African Studies at Rhodes
House, the Institute of Commonwealth Studies, the Museum of English Rural
Life, the Royal Northern College of Music, and the Scott Polar Research
Institute.
These include records of the British Antarctic Expedition, 1875-1876;
letters from novelist Barbara Pym (1913-1980) to poet Philip Larkin
(1922-1985); and papers of Uri Davis (born 1943), scholar of the
Arab-Israeli conflict.
