KEEPER OF MANUSCRIPTS AND ARCHIVES

The John Rylands University Library of Manchester (JRULM)
houses an internationally renowned collection of manuscripts and
archives, as well as some 3.75 million printed volumes dating from
the origins of printing to the present day. It also possesses the
largest collection of networked electronic resources in the country.
The Library's Special Collections Division, in which this post is
based, will operate from the Main University Library from now until
2006 when its normal home in the John Rylands Library,
Deansgate, will re-open with much enhanced facilities following a
£16 million pound refurbishment, funded largely by the Heritage
Lottery Fund and European Regional Development Fund.
You will have responsibility for managing the manuscript and
archive collections within the wider collection management policies
of the Special Collections Division. You will also be expected to
review and implement acquisition policies, policies for conservation
and collection care and policies and programmes for cataloguing
both manuscript and archive collections. In addition we will looking
to you to implement strategies to improve access to manuscript
and archive collections both within the academic and more broadly.
You should have a degree in a subject area represented within the
Library, as well as a professional qualification in librarianship,
archives or other relevant area. You should also have experience of
managing both professional and support staff in a library or related
institution as well as excellent communication skills. Experience of
working with researchers and the general public as well as of
fundraising and promotional work will be added recommendations.
Possession of a postgraduate degree in a relevant subject and
publications in the field of bibliography or another relevant area will
also be advantageous.
Salary £35,251- £39,958 p.a. (under review)

UMIST and The Victoria University of Manchester will form a single
university from autumn 2004. Both universities guarantee to all staff
in their employment at the time a post in the new institution at a
salary level and with conditions of service equivalent to those they
