UNIVERSITY OF OXFORD
ASHMOLEAN MUSEUM
DEPARTMENT OF ANTIQUITIES
PROJECT ARCHIVIST
Salary grade RS1A (points D31.1-3): £18,265 to £20,311, pro rata for an
eleven month post
The Ashmolean Museum has received funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund for
a project entitled Archives and Artefacts: Exploring the past through A2A
and the work of E.T.Leeds. The project is a partnership between the
Ashmolean Museum, the Access to Archives programme of the National Archives
(A2A), the Oxfordshire Record Office, and the Oxfordshire Sites and
Monuments Record. The project concerns the archive of Edward Thurlow Leeds
(1877-1955), pioneer of landscape archaeology in the Thames Valley, the
Anglo-Saxon settlement of Britain, and of integrating research on
documentary archives with archaeological data in investigating the
historical past.
The project will employ a professional archivist to catalogue and organise
the archive to internationally recognized archival standards, and to carry
out basic preservation work under the guidance of the Ashmolean's
Conservation Department. The archivist will also be a part of the project
educational team who will create web-based educational resources based on
the archive for schools and the general public.
Applicants should possess a diploma or master's degree in archive
administration. Familiarity with electronic cataloguing methods, especially
CALM software, and with the A2A project work would be an advantage.
Applications from individuals who have just completed their training would
be welcome. The archivist should be well organised and self-motivated as
well as capable of working as part of a team.
This is a full-time post, with funding to point 3 on the RS1A scale provided
for eleven months. Further information and an application form may be
obtained from Julia Allen, Ashmolean Museum, Oxford OX1 2PH. E-mail:
[log in to unmask], or telephone 01965 278008, or consult
www.ashmol.ox.ac.uk <http://www.ashmol.ox.ac.uk>. The closing date for
