A last posting from me on the query of purchasing Display cases.
1. Accessibility:
Further considerations that purchasers and specifiers of showcases need to
bear in mind are those relating to accessibility: what height of a case is
good for wheelchair users; how about colours that contrast well with items
to be exhibited as an aid to those with weaker vision? Some guidance on this
can be seen on the MLA website on the 'Disability' pages of the 'Learning &
access' menu of the 'Action' tab/part of the site. An officer of the agency
can advise, but for specifics in terms of measurements other organisations
and museums have published specific recommendations (and there are no doubt
British Standards etc.) http://www.mla.gov.uk/action/learnacc/00access.asp
2. For loans from non-national Museums, look under the 'Action' section
again to find details of the Government Indemnity Scheme (GIS); some pages
re-direct towards the 'Information' part of the site.
3. Generally, some case manufacturers will allow you to specify whatever you
want - at a price to be agreed. While this is a useful thing - particularly
if a special design is wanted- it is in the short-term at least quite an
encumbrance. If you start to specify cases outside of the ordinary you have
to think through many different considerations and start to be absolutely
specific about what you want; expect this to take longer than you first
thought. Do not let this put you off taking this approach as the results
will be worth it in the end, but be warned it will take some time. There is
a guide to specifying showcases on the MLA website - see 'information'
section, then 'security'.
4. Further to the two trade shows I mentioned recently, I know that some
display case suppliers will be exhibiting next month at the Museums &
Heritage Show, Earl's Court, London. http://www.museumsandheritage.com/
I think that's most things covered; I hope this helps people either now or
at a future date.

Subject: [ARCHIVES-NRA] Display cases
> Does anyone have details/experience of suppliers for display cases,
especially in the London area? We're looking for something which could be
used for displaying the IEE silver (plates, trays, cups etc.).
