Dear All,
As an organisation we have discovered a conflict in the way double barrelled names are listed in the archives, the library and the organisation generally. As archivists we use the ISAAR (CPF) and National Council on Archives, Rules for the Construction of Personal, Place and Corporate Names, standards, but have discovered that the library (also cataloguing on CALM!) and our institution differ in listing double barrelled names. For instance, with a name like John Brown-Smith, we archivists catalogue under the second portion of the name Smith, John Brown, with Brown-Smith, John listed in the non-preferred term field. However, the Library, and the institutional databases held by the organisation, list such a name as Brown-Smith, John, only.
Our institution would like to standardize authority terms, and we wondered if anyone out there has faced the same problem, and if so, what was the outcome?
I am happy to summarise responses for the list.
