I am trying to obtain some information on electoral registration in England
and Wales. In particular I want to know who was responsible for compiling
and maintaining registers of electors from 1832 onwards. I know that
originally overseers were responsible for producing lists of voters which
were then kept by Clerks of the Peace. At a later stage registers have been
kept by county and district councils. If anyone has more precise information
or can suggest a particularly useful source I would be most grateful. I will
also pass on any information I get to anyone else who is interested.
Thanks,
