Dear colleagues,
Many of you have already responded to the consultation exercise which The
National Archives launched late last year on the development of a new
"framework of standards" for our repository inspection and advisory
services. Your responses have been welcome and will be extremely valuable to
us in taking this work forwards over the next few months. We are keen to
hear from those of you who still wish to respond, and have added an
electronic version of the consultation paper to our web site at:
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/news/framework_of_standards_intro.htm
The creation of The National Archives in April 2003 gave us the opportunity
to take a fresh look at standards already in place for the care and
management of records and archives. This consultation exercise represents
the first stage in this process. Our aim is to ensure that the best possible
advice and guidance is available from The National Archives to all who share
our concern for the care and preservation of records and archives. I hope
therefore that you will take the opportunity to let us know what you think
about the proposals which this consultation paper sets out.
The period of consultation will end on Friday 27 February 2004 and I look
forward to receiving your views before that date. Further copies of this
consultation paper can be obtained from me at the address below.
