As someone with a double-barrel surname, and a welsh non-hyphened one to
boot, that there is an option frustrates me greatly!

To see your surname mangled and treated as a part middle name is at best
frustrating and at worst down right annoying!

As someone quite focussed on this issue, most archives seem to mangle away
quite happily unless, on occasion, the individual is so famous that a
concession is made!!

Most searchers also seem quite capable of trying the correct form of the
surname and/or the mangled when researching so from that perspective it is
perhaps a minor issue.

However, to call me M P. Owen is as logical as recording a Pritchard as a
Chard, a Roberts as an Erts or Jones as Ones!! Is there any logic here?
Would anyone with a single word surname stand for this? I think not!! And
of course, all of this is completely outwith the issue of trying to cope
with surnames from other cultures...mac and ap both spring to mind here
without moving from native British cultures!!

This is perhaps an issue where a standard reflecting SI concerns is needed?
It may even benefit from consultation with groups representing various
cultures!

On a lighter note, I have seen "George V" referenced as "V George, King" so
I suppose name mangling is perhaps endemic!

Apologies for the rant,

Meic Pierce Owen

organisation generally. As archivists we use the ISAAR (CPF) and National
Council on Archives, Rules for the Construction of Personal, Place and
Corporate Names, standards, but have discovered that the library (also
cataloguing on CALM!) and our institution differ in listing double
barrelled names. For instance, with a name like John Brown-Smith, we
archivists catalogue under the second portion of the name Smith, John
Brown, with Brown-Smith, John listed in the non-preferred term field.
However, the Library, and the institutional databases held by the
organisation, list such a name as Brown-Smith, John, only.
