Matthew,
this is an interesting question.....and one that I get asked from
time to time here at TASI.
I know you need a 'tele-cine' machine to do it properly, but these
tend to be quite expensive machines to own and run.....and I am not
sure where one can find a company that can take the proper care
necessary to digitise old and fragile film.
On the other hand I have heard from people who claim really quite
reasonable results from doing it themselves manually by setting up a
'back-projection' screen and a video camera to record the film as it
is projected.
I would love to hear what you learn, so please do report back to the
list with your findings as I am sure that many will be interested.
cheers
eib

Subject: Conversion of 16mm and 8mm film to digital
I am seeking some advice on how to convert old 16mm and 8mm film
footage to digital format. The films date back to the 1950's and
therefore may need some careful treatment.
Could anyone advise on any commercial companies who can advise on the
procedures and costs involved in this type of work. Or if you have
knowledge or experience of it perhaps you could let me know.
Please reply on list or offlist to [log in to unmask]
Any help appreciated,
Matthew Goldschmied
