The links between community, work and family have generated widespread
interdisciplinary and global interest and now constitute an important area
of
study in the social sciences, with major implications for a range of
professionals and policy makers. This international conference is organized
by
the global editorial team of the journal Community, Work and Family and
hosted
by the Research Institute of Health and Social Change at Manchester
Metropolitan University.   The conference will provide a forum for social
scientists and practitioners to share research, experiences and ideas and to
stimulate debate on current issues and controversies relating to community,
work and family and their interface. Given the pervasiveness and speed of
change and experiences of shifting boundaries in communities, workplaces and
families, there will be a particular focus on ongoing and future change and
transformations, from multiple perspectives.

Conference Themes
Submissions are encouraged on change and transformation taking place in the
interlinked domains of:  community and work; work and family; and family and
community. Themes have been selected to reflect the diverse debates and
perspectives emerging in the journal Community, Work and Family,   including
but not limited to the following;

·     Care
Ø     The relationship between care and the rest of life in the context of
globalisation and social change
Ø     Gender, care and well-being
Ø     Care, home and place
Ø     Care in diverse contexts
Ø     Perspectives of carers and the cared for.
Ø     Social policy and care
Ø     Care and professional practice

·     The integration of paid work and personal life
Ø     Globalisation and the integration of paid work and family / personal
life in
diverse populations
Ø     Shifting boundaries between paid work, family and other areas of life
Ø     Work-personal life integration, gender equity and well being
Ø     Integration  of paid work and family and life course transitions
Ø     Work-personal life integration and social policy

·     Organisational change
Ø     Organisational well being, effectiveness and  sustainability  in times
of
change and transition
Ø     Work personal life integration, innovation and learning organisations
Ø     Organisational change and gender equity
Ø     The impact of changing working conditions on communities and families.
Ø     Strategy and processes of workplace transformation
Ø     “Work-life balance” initiatives
Ø     Work and organisational values in relation to families and/or
communities

·     Community participation
Ø     Community and neighbourhood initiatives on work and/or families
Ø     Community participation, gender and well being
Ø     Community strategies for reducing inequities and social exclusion
Ø     Participation in rural, urban and virtual communities

·     Diversity, inclusion and marginalisation
Ø     Diverse communities
Ø     Diverse workplaces
Ø     Diversity in families
Ø     Perspectives of people marginalized by or excluded from  communities,
workplaces and/or families.

Ø     Implications  of  transformations in communities, workplaces and

policy and practice to improve people’s lives
Ø     Social policy and organisational and family  practices
Ø     Supporting diverse families and communities through times of social
change

Ø     Well being in the context of social changes at global, national,
institutional
        and local levels.
Ø     Strategies for empowerment and positive well being

Early registration by 1st December 2004
Last date of registration for abstract to be included in the Book of
Abstracts
 30th January 2005

Submission of full papers for publication in the Proceedings, by the first
day
of the conference 16 March 2005


Submission of Abstracts
Abstracts of between 250 and 500 words should be sent by email to
[log in to unmask]   by 30th September 2004. These will be peer reviewed.

All abstracts other than those for symposia (see below) should be submitted
in
the following format:

Title of paper or poster
Full name of author(s) with an asterix besides the presenting author(s)
Affiliation of authors
Address of authors including phone, fax and email address

Main theme or themes addressed

Preferred type of presentation (oral, poster, roundtable or other forms of
presentation, other than symposia, see below)

Abstract. 250- 500 words single spaced with 2.5cm margins on all sides

Cover page: Title of symposium (centred and bold)
Name of symposium chair(s) or organiser(s)
Affiliation of symposium chair(s) or organiser(s)
Full contact details of symposium chair(s) or organiser(s)

Main theme or themes addressed

Abstract: 150 words on the objectives of the symposium . This should be
single
spaced with 2.5cm margins
