MPHIL & PHD STUDENTSHIPS FOR JAPANESE STUDIES AT THE UNIVERSITY OF HONG KONG
The Department of Japanese Studies, The University of Hong Kong, offers
postgraduate research supervision in the following areas (primary research
specialisms of the faculty are asterisked*): Ainu studies*, business*,
linguistics*, education*, literature*, Hong Kong-Japan relations*,
anthropology*, gender studies, popular culture, and minority studies. The
Department currently has 10 postgraduate students; details of the research
topics of former and current students (together with links to homepages) can
be found at http://www.hku.hk/japanese/researchstudent.html. Some specific
suggestions about possible research topics can be found at
http://www.hku.hk/japanese/postgraduate.html.
The M.Phil. and Ph.D. programmes are thesis-based programmes and are
suitable for students who wish to concentrate upon writing a thesis over
two, three, or four years. The M.Phil. is a two-year programme with a
limited coursework component. The Ph.D. offers the alternatives of a
three-year programme without coursework for students with previous
postgraduate training, or a four-year programme with a limited coursework
component for students with no previous postgraduate training. It is
expected that students applying for the programme will already have a good
standard of spoken and written Japanese, as well as excellent English.
Theses must be written in English.
Successful applicants will receive a studentship of HK$12,000 per month for
the duration of their studies (subject to satisfactory performance), from
which they must pay annual tuition fees of HK$42,100. Up to 100 hours of
Departmental duties per year are assigned. The studentship adequately
covers living expenses in Hong Kong. The Hong Kong dollar is pegged to the
US dollar at approximately US$1=HK$7.8.
Application forms may be obtained from The Graduate School, The University
of Hong Kong, Pokfulam Road, Hong Kong ([log in to unmask]). Applications
must contain a detailed research proposal. We strongly advise those
interested to contact the Head of Department or another staff member as
early as possible, to discuss the research topic and the development of the
proposal. Further enquiries may be made to Dr Peter Cave, Department of
Japanese Studies, The University of Hong Kong, Pokfulam Road, Hong Kong
([log in to unmask] ) or directly to lecturers in the Department. For
further information, see the homepage of the Department
(www.hku.hk/japanese/), the Graduate School (www.hku.hk/gradsch/), or the
University (www.hku.hk). The deadlines for applications is 31 January 2005.
M.Phil. students must start their studies on either 1 September 2005 or 1
January 2006. Ph.D. students may start their studies on the first day of
any calendar month.
