Call for papers
Contemporary South Asia (June 2005): The Himalayan
region and Northeast India
The June 2005 of Contemporary South Asia issue focuses
on the contemporary issues of the people of the
Himalayan region that stretches from Ladakh, Himachal
Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh in India to the Himalayan
kingdoms of Nepal and Bhutan and the states of North
East India including Sikkim.
We invite submissions from academics and young
researchers (advanced PhD scholars and post-doc
researchers) who are undertaking research on the
issues of the region following a multi-disciplinary
perspective including politics, anthropology,
sociology, development, geography, gender and cultural
studies. Contributions based on recent fieldwork are
being encouraged for submissions in the issue. The
special issue has a regional focus and themes
suggested include:
State and civil society
Identity and cultural politics
Religion and polity, and religious institutions
Trans-national networks
Displacement and resistance
Globalisation and development
Gender
Environment
Law
Submissions will be selected for publication following
anonymous review by an international editorial board
comprising distinguished regional specialists of the
region.
The title of the proposed paper, abstract (200-250
words) and biographical details (name, institutional
affiliation, and research status) should be emailed by
30th June to:

Selected abstracts will be invited to submit full
articles (5000-6000 words) by 30th August 2004.
All queries should be directed to the co-editors of
the issue: Richard Whitecross (Univ. of Edinburgh) and
