BIOMATHEMATICS AND STATISTICS SCOTLAND
POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHER
BioSS seeks a Postdoctoral Researcher to develop and test mathematical
and statistical methodology to assess environmental risks associated
with invasive species, climate change and pollution at the European
scale. The work is funded through a multi-organisational EU project:
ALARM (Assessing LArge scale Risks using tested Methods, see,
www.alarmproject.net/). Our partner organisations in ALARM will provide
a rich set of spatial data, offering a unique opportunity to advance
understanding of environmental risks. The challenge will be to model
different types of spatial data in the presence of spatial correlations,
missing values and uncertainty. The successful applicant will also
contribute to the Complex Systems and Risk research theme at BioSS
(www.bioss.ac.uk/research/systems.html). The post holder will be
expected to develop collaborations with several of the partner
organisations across Europe and attend regular project meetings.
Applicants should have a strong quantitative background and enthusiasm
for applying statistics and mathematics to environmental problems.
Knowledge of spatial statistical methods is an advantage and there will
be opportunities to develop methodology for spatio-temporal systems. A
key requirement is the ability to communicate with collaborators from a
range of disciplines and nationalities on scientific and statistical issues
Candidates should have a good relevant degree and at least 2 years
postgraduate experience (PhD or MSc preferred).
The appointment will start in September 2004 for a period of 4 years and
