Medical Statistics Unit
Lancaster University
MSc in Medical Statistics
This one-year course offers a thorough training in medical statistics with
the following distinctive structure:
* core statistical theory and methods, for designed experiments (clinical
trials) and observational studies (epidemiology),
* modern, advanced statistical methods relevant to the interpretation of
data from the medical and health sciences,
* practical skills for the consulting statistician, including an overview
of health services research issues,
* in-depth project applying statistical methods to a substantive problem
in medical or health services research.
There is currently an under-supply of qualified medical statisticians in
the UK. Graduates from the course will be well placed to embark on a career
in the public or private sector, or to progress to further study for a PhD.
Lancaster has one of the strongest university statistics groups in the UK,
with a particular emphasis on applied work.
The course is supported by the Medical Research Council, the Department of
Health, AstraZeneca, Amgen, and GlaxoSmithKline, each of whom may provide
studentships. A studentship covers fees (UK/EU rates) plus around 10,000
pounds living allowance.
