Subject: Old SAS files
I have data on a SAS file provided by ESRC data archive which relates
to
a version of SAS prior to one that can be handled by the programme
STAT-TRANSFER.
It appears to be two files -- one card image which is not delimited in
any way together with a file with control cards
( I am old enough to remember inputting my data using actual as opposed
to
virtual card readers -- so am familiar with this).
What I would like to do is to input this data into STATA or SPSS.
It is a long while ago that I had familiarity with SAS so I am not
even
sure that recent versions could handle this data with a view to creating
SAS -transport files -- which I gather is a possibilty.
I have two questions
(a) Is there any way that I can handle my task without resorting to SAS
(b) Even if I used SAS for purposes above , can old files be read -- I
am
loth to re-familiarise myself with SAS unless it is necessary.
Any tips from anyone who may have had similar tasks would be gratefully
received
