This new vacancy provides an outstanding opportunity for a statistician
wishing to develop their methodological expertise in clinical trial research
within two successful, rapidly expanding research Units.
The School of Health Science (<http://www.healthsci.bham.ac.uk/>) supports
the Health Maintenance and Rehabilitation research theme, which is led by
Professor Cath Sackley. The theme contains three strands, investigations of
assessment and new interventions at the level of impairment, evaluations of
health interventions (predominately clinical trials) and disability
epidemiology. The work addresses the problems experienced by disabled and
often elderly populations. The post holder will be able to specialise in a
new and rapidly expanding field, the programme has attracted nearly 2
million in investment in the first 2 years.
In order to provide support within the post holders own discipline he/she
will have will have the opportunity to establish links with The Birmingham
Clinical Trials Unit (BCTU at www.bctu.bham.ac.uk
<http://www.bctu.bham.ac.uk>). This unit, directed by Professors Richard
Gray and Keith Wheatley, is funded by the NHS to undertake clinical research
across a wide range of medical specialties. Since its establishment in
1997,the BCTU has been awarded some £10 million in external funding. The
BCTU provides an advisory service to clinicians wishing to undertake
clinical trials, and also adopts a proactive role by undertaking
meta-analyses of current evidence, and instigating new clinical trials in
key areas where current evidence is inadequate. The BCTU's main in-house
studies are in Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, renal disease,
surgery, gynaecology and leukaemia, but the Unit has also provided advice
and support to over 100 other studies.
We wish to appoint a statistician to join our expanding team and play a
central role in the School's research theme. This new vacancy provides an
outstanding opportunity for a statistician wishing to develop their
methodological expertise in clinical trial and rehabilitation research
within two successful, rapidly expanding research Units. Duties will
include: designing trials and assessing their feasibility, development of
data management systems, assessing the properties of clinical measures,
analysis and reporting of trials, with particular responsibility for the
rehabilitation trials. Meta-analyses of existing data, to provide reliable
evidence on treatment efficacy and to identify future key research
questions, will also be undertaken.
A good class degree in statistics or other numerate discipline is essential.
Applicants should also have a postgraduate qualification, or at least 2
year's experience in applied statistics. Applicants should have strong
statistical and computing skills, a sound knowledge of statistical packages
(preferably SAS), good attention to detail, the ability to work both
independently and as part of a team, the ability to communicate statistical
issues to non-statisticians and a desire to develop skills in applied
medical statistics.
Terms & Conditions
- Candidates should have a PhD or be of postdoctoral standing
(someone who can demonstrate equivalent and relevant professional
experience).
- Training provision towards an academic position will be provided.
- Annual performance appraisals and personal development advice will
be provided to the Fellows.
- Each Fellow will be offered a permanent post at the end of the
fellowship that is appropriate to their career path, subject to satisfactory
completion of probation.
- Fellows will be provided with general infrastructure, equipment
and technical support.
- The Minimum level of salary on appointment will be £21, 640.
