Department of Statistical Science
University College London
A number of funded PhD studentships are available in the Department of
Statistical Science at UCL commencing October 2004. In addition to the
specific projects listed below, research projects are available on many
topics within the Department's general research themes. For full details
of these studentships, the associated projects and other sample projects,

Funded studentships
-------------------
Studentship 1. An EPSRC funded studentship is available for research in
any area of Statistics. Full details of EPSRC studentships are available
at http://www.epsrc.ac.uk/WebSite/default.aspx?ZoneID=2&MenuID=811.
Funding: The award covers fees and a maintenance stipend of at least
11,500 pounds per annum (free of tax) in 2004/5. Enhanced student
stipends may be available for suitably qualified candidates.
Eligibility: Full studentships are available to UK applicants. Other EU
applicants may apply for a "fees-only" award.
Deadline: 18 June
Studentship 2. The Department is a participant in the Dorothy Hodgkin
Postgraduate Awards scheme. Ten studentships are awarded competitively
across UCL for research in any area. Full details of the scheme may be
found at http://www.rcuk.ac.uk/hodgkin/.
Funding: The awards cover overseas fees and a maintenance stipend of at
least 10,500 pounds per annum (free of tax) in 2004/5. Enhanced student

Hong Kong, Russia and the developing world, as defined by the Development
Assistance Committee of the OECD.
Deadline: 21 May
Studentship 3. A NERC/EPSRC funded EMS studentship is available for a
project to analyse the spatial and temporal structure of rainfall
processes and evaluate various implications of this structure. This
project will build on a long-standing interdisciplinary research
collaboration between statisticians at UCL and hydrologists at Imperial
College. Further information about the programme appears on the NERC
website at http://www.nerc.ac.uk/funding/interdisciplinary/.
Funding: The award covers fees and a maintenance stipend of 18,000 pounds
per annum (free of tax) in 2004/5.
Eligibility: Full studentships are available to UK applicants. Other EU
applicants may apply for a "fees-only" award.
Deadline: 18 June
Studentship 4. A studentship funded by the National Medical Laser Centre
at UCL is available for a project to study the use of photodynamic therapy
(PDT) as a means of preventing a condition called Barrett's oesophagus
developing into cancer of the gullet. The main statistical issue is how
best to use high-dimensional spectroscopic data for diagnostic purposes.
This project is an interdisciplinary research collaboration between the
Department of Statistical Science and a research team at the National
Medical Laser that includes physicists, clinicians and laboratory
scientists.
Funding: The award covers home fees and a maintenance stipend of at least
11,500 pounds per annum (free of tax) in 2004/5.
Eligibility: This studentship is open to all applicants. Non-EU
applicants will need to fund the additional cost of overseas fees.
Deadline: 18 June
Studentship 5. A studentship funded by the MRC CTU (Clinical Trials Unit)
is available for a project "Assessing the importance of stage to prognosis
in cancer". This project arises in part from the strategic alliance and
joint research programme between the MRC CTU and the Cancer Research UK
Medical Statistics Group, Oxford. The student will be registered with the
UCL Department of Statistical Science but is likely to spend time
regularly both in London and in Oxford. Full details of MRC studentships
are
available at http://www.mrc.ac.uk/pdf-studentship_handbook-sep03.pdf.
Funding: The award covers home fees and a maintenance stipend of at least

The Department
--------------
The Department of Statistical Science at UCL has a large and active group
of postgraduate research students and a highly successful taught MSc in
Statistics. The Department has played a major role in the development of
Statistical Science ever since its foundation in 1911 as the Department of
Applied Statistics - the first such department in the world - with Karl
Pearson as its head. More than 90 years on, the present staff of the
Department continue to make important contributions to the advancement of
the subject. Research interests cover a wide spectrum, from the
foundations of the subject through to applications in industry, science
and medicine. For further information about the Department go to
http://www.ucl.ac.uk/Stats/ and follow the relevant links.
