The Official Statistics Section of the RSS (www.rss.org.uk) are hosting
a short meeting looking at how the impact of the
London congestion charge has been and will
be monitored.
Unlike driving into the centre of London, there is no charge
for this meeting.

Monitoring the introduction of congestion charging in London
CHARLES BUCKINGHAM (Transport for London)
ALON CARMEL (Greater London Authority)
DOROTHY SALATHIEL (National Travel Survey)
The introduction of congestion charging in London has been a high
profile scheme, which represented a radical development in transport
policy within the United Kingdom. Whilst few people doubt the efficacy
in terms of the reduction of congestion within the charging zone, the
broader impact of the scheme will remain controversial for some time. It
is therefore an extremely high profile example of the way in which
official statistics can inform policy decision. Speakers will therefore
describe how monitoring can take place in terms of congestion and
transport, the effect on the broader economy and the potential for the
National Travel Survey to monitor the long term effects on modal shift.
