PhD Studentships
Department of Probability and Statistics
University of Sheffield
The Department of Probability and Statistics, University of Sheffield, is
offering three fully-funded three year PhD studentships, to start in
September 2004 (other starting dates may be possible by arrangement),
funded by EPSRC, NERC, and the University of Sheffield.
The details of the studentships vary, but all offer UK students a
maintenance grant starting at between 13,500 pounds and 16,000 pounds per
annum. In some cases, NERC/EPSRC rules mean that EU students may be
eligible only for fees, not maintenance; see below for details. Non-EU
students are not eligible for these studentships in normal circumstances.
The Department has an excellent research record, a large and active group
of postgraduate research students, and a highly successful taught MSc; see
http://www.shef.ac.uk/~pas/PhD/ for general background.
SUBJECT AREAS
One of the studentships, funded by EPSRC, may be awarded in any area of
probability or statistics in which there is expertise in the department.
This includes statistical modelling, Bayesian inference, experimental
design, applied probability, and a wide range of statistical applications.
Details of these areas can be found in the departmental web pages at
http://www.shef.ac.uk/~pas/PhD/ and http://www.shef.ac.uk/~pas/research/.
For UK students, the maintenance grant will be 10,500 pounds in 2004/5,
rising to 12,000 from 2005/6, PLUS an EPSRC "priority area" payment (for a
project within statistics) of 3000 pounds per annum.
The other two studentships are on specific topics, developing methodology
for investigating contemporaneity in palaeo-environmental and
archaeological records, under an interdisciplinary supervisory team
comprising Dr Caitlin Buck (Probability and Statistics, Sheffield), Dr
Paul Pettitt (Archaeology, Sheffield) and Dr. Andrew Millard (Archaeology,
Durham). An NERC/EPSRC Environmental Mathematics studentship will focus on
palaeo-environmental aspects; for UK students only, the maintenance grant
will be 16,000 pounds per annum (EU students are eligible for fees only).
A University of Sheffield studentship will focus on archaeological
aspects; the maintenance grant for UK and EU students will be 10,500
pounds in 2004/5, rising to 12,000 from 2005/6, PLUS for UK students only
an EPSRC "priority area" payment of 3000 pounds per annum.
In addition to these three studentships based in this department, a
studentship is available based at the Southampton Oceanography Centre and
jointly supervised with the University of Sheffield; see
