FOUR RESEARCH STUDENTSHIPS in STATISTICS AND PROBABILITY
The Department of Statistics offers four funded PhD studentships, for
three years from 1 October 2004. Applicants should have or expect either
a Masters-level or good honours degree (class 2:1 or above) in a
mathematical subject, and a strong interest in the study and development
of modern statistical methods or probability.
The Department of Statistics at Warwick gained the highest grade, 5*,
in the most recent national research assessment. The Department has a
lively research environment and provides excellent facilities for its
research students. For more information see

EPSRC Doctoral Training Awards
Two studentships will be supported by EPSRC Doctoral Training Awards. A
DTA covers full-time PhD student fees and provides a tax-free maintenance
allowance, which is at least £10,500 per annum, plus an additional £5,000
over three years. For these two studentships, research in any area of
probability and statistics can be considered.
RESEARCH STUDENTSHIP IN STATISTICAL METHODOLOGY
One funded PhD studentship is under the supervision of Professor David
Firth. The area of research is open, but applications from students
interested in contributing to methods used in social science (including
psychology, politics, sociology, social policy and economics) are
especially welcome. The research could be theoretical, empirical or
computational in character.
Funding will be at the level of a standard EPSRC DTA. Eligible students
will be expected to apply also for alternative sources of funding with the
Department's support.
RESEARCH STUDENTSHIP IN META-ANALYSIS
One PhD studentship is funded through an EPSRC grant, under the
supervision of Professor John Copas and Dr Jane Hutton. Although
applications and case studies will be an important part of the work, the
main emphasis of the research will be on theoretical understanding and
development of the statistical aspects of meta analysis. Initial ideas for
research will focus on publication, small sample and reporting biases, or
heterogeneity.
Funding will be at the level of a standard EPSRC DTA.
