NERC/EPSRC PhD Studentship with Enhanced Stipend
(funded under the NERC/EPSRC Environmental Mathematics and Statistics (EMS) programme).
Departments of Mathematics and Physics
Imperial College London.
CLOUD DETECTION USING GROUND-BASED INFRA-RED CAMERAS
----------------------------------------------------
The student will undertake research into developing novel methods
to characterise and detect cloud cover using digital infra-red cameras.
This project will involve state-of the art pattern recognition tools to
help the UK Met Office in their analysis of unique thermal images of the
sky and clouds they routinely take. Advanced mathematical statistical
computation techniques, including Markov chain Monte Carlo, will
be utilized to perform inference for a dynamic spatial model of cloud formation.
The student must have at least an upper second class degree in Physics,
Mathematics or Computing.
This is a special initiative and the normal research council
stipend is enhanced by £4000 per annum starting in October 2004.
For NERC PhD students, the basic stipend in 2003/2004
is £14,000 pa (within London). The full studentship is only available
to Home (UK) candidates.
This is a joint project between the the Mathematics and Physics Departments.
