>Title of Paper
Perturbing geological data: from Gregory and Becke to Napier and the new Euclid
>Brief synopsis (max 50 words)
Many problems in geology and related disciplines involve compositional data
showing substantial variability, for example, major oxide and trace element
compositions of metamorphosed Scottish limestones, granulometric
compositions such as (sand, silt, clay) deposits in Arctic lakes, pollen
zonation data. Despite warnings and pleas from geologists, such as Felix
Chayes, in the 1960s, statisticians have been slow to develop meaningful
analysis of such constant-sumdata. It is only within the last two decades
that sensible methods have been developed. This talk will demonstrate how
collaboration between geologist and statistician can apply a simple
methodology to answering substantial questions in geology.
